Who are You Lookin' at?
In scripture we see this in the life of Jesus when the people of Nazareth just couldn't accept Jesus as anyone but "that carpenter's kid". In another context in scripture is a reference in the book of Matthew chapter 10, verse 41: "Whoever welcomes a prophet as a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever welcomes a righteous person as a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward." In this passage Jesus is talking about people accepting God working through himself and others.
Accepting someone as a prophet, pastor, evangelist, or any other spiritual authority can be difficult if we are too familiar with that person or if they don't look and act that part in our opinion. But if we will take our eyes off of the person and place our spiritual focus on God then we can receive the gift that God may have for us through that person. A lot of the time this can be through some unlikely sources. The Bible is full of examples of unlikely heroes of the faith.
Spiritual leaders have the responsibility to stand true in their calling, knowing that it is by unqualified merit that they are selected to serve and then serving humbly out of obedience. The people they serve have the choice of simply seeing them as good old Sheila or Fred from the neighborhood or looking to God's chosen vessel for the blessing that God desires to bring through that person. Receiving from and being "fed" by spiritual leadership is a choice.
Who has God placed in your life to bless you? Are you just looking critically at the person or are you looking for a prophet's reward? Who are you lookin' at?
May God Bless You!
