Who are You Lookin' at?

Did you ever notice that it is easier to take someone seriously as an expert if you don't know them very well? If they look and act the part and seem to be qualified a relative stranger can have tremendous influence. The same isn't always true from someone you know really well though. The kid from elementary school you conned into eating a worm during third grade recess may not be your first choice for life advice, even if that person is now a well-educated adult who has her life together.

Not the Caps Lock!

Another lighter moment from the sarcasm by Tim page.

Team Jesus

The members of a team, like the members of a body, are all individuals. They all look different, act different, smell different, and usually think very differently from each other. If personal opinions and agendas come first for any individual member the whole team suffers.

Where’s the Gain for my Pain?

It is now ironic that I posted a meme about the discomfort involved in change this morning. That was before I attempted my run. The other night I pushed it too far in the heat. Afterward I was feeling pretty bad and my knee started to hurt. Over the last couple of months my knee had stopped bothering me about walking. Obviously I forgot to ask it for it’s opinion about running. It is not a fan. I anticipated this today and went with a shortened goal with a long warm up and stretching first. That part went fine.

The Common Core

A little something from my sarcasm by Tim page, for those less serious moments that our souls need.

Is Success Measured in Metric or US Standard?

We were discussing how to take measurements for dieting this morning along with the pros and cons of measurements and weigh-ins. Either approach can be problematic if they are the only standard for success. True success in dieting is a dramatic increase in overall health. While there can be a lot of tangible evidence of good health, it is more of an abstract state. We only refer to measurements to show progress and meet certain accepted criteria.

The whole concept of success got my wheels turning as I considered it in other aspects of life. We can succeed at different things like weight loss, running a race, wealth, status, etc., but true success is a different matter entirely. There are things that can be weigh-ins but they are not success itself. Succeeding at life is less tangible.

Diet of Rocks - The First Temptation

After forty days of fasting a healthy person’s body begins to shut down. If it is an intentional fast this is about as long as you can safely go. If you are not completely healthy it would be dangerous to go this far. Jesus was exhausted and weak. Hunger pangs had gone away many days before this point. Now he just felt sick. Death was a very real possibility if he did not eat soon. He had submitted to the Spirit’s leading and where he had ended up was not good. It isn’t a good feeling when you realize that the vultures are starting to notice you.

One Small Step

Enhance Your Life By Failing At Math!

The weather was beautiful this morning with a drop in humidity and low to mid 70’s for temperatures as the new day started. I’m not much of a morning person but this was too good to miss. So rather than going out for an evening run around the neighborhood I went to the park this morning with Lisa. When we got there Lisa went one way to do her thing and I went to the causeway so I could run by the water out to the beach and back a couple of times. My goal was to run out, back, and out again then do a short video at the beach and take a cool down walk back to the car.

If Divided We Stand, Then Together We Will Fall

It was an honor to attend a moving ceremony commemorating the events of 9/11/2001 yesterday. The memorial was very well done and appropriate. I waited in line to get a picture of the wreath in front of the memorial sculpture afterward. As I turned and looked beyond the sculpture a commercial airliner was descending in the clear blue sky on approach to the airport. That visual with a twisted piece of the world trade center next to me stopped me cold for a moment.

In the years since this great tragedy of our time the grim task of dealing with the evil behind it has caused tragedy on a much greater scale. The countries where this unthinkably immoral mindset originated have gone from turmoil to devastation. For America it has resulted in far too many tombstones and injuries, both physical and emotional, to our volunteer defenders.

Back in September of 2001 the results of this tragedy were evident everywhere we looked. American flags flew from buildings and cars. We were all New Yorkers as the horrible work proceeded at ground zero. Politicians set aside their agendas and differences. Churches were filled to capacity. In pain we were united. The shock and cold reality of the world we live in brought us to seek our God. Young men and women lined up at recruiting offices to defend our nation. And the star-studded benefit concerts brought in desperately needed financial relief for the families of the fallen.

You'll Never Believe What Happened When I Tipped the Scales in My Favor!

Eating healthy and getting enough exercise had never been high on my list of priorities. As a result I found myself logging a 54th birthday with about 16% more of me in the math on the bathroom scales than I should have and a growing list of health problems. My medicine cabinet was seeing frequent use and my routine blood work at the doctor’s office not only had bad things to say about my health but there was also a scary number that sent me to a specialist to see if I had prostate cancer. Fortunately I didn’t have cancer, the PSA markers going up were a direct result of a sedentary lifestyle.

My wife had started a radical change in diet several months previously with impressive results in her health and she had wrestled off 50 pounds already. I had been helpful with only occasional teasing and we experimented with healthy recipes and strategies together. This clean eating thing can be very inconvenient and expensive if you don’t work out a whole new way of doing food. Part of the reason it was complicated at this point was that we were on completely different diets. My wife and son were on one plan, and I was on another. It was time for me to make some changes.

God Does Not Need My Help

A few years ago I was working on a project involving woodworking tools and requiring woodworking skills. I am lacking in both but attach my very masculinity on getting the job done right. As I was working I kept getting interruptions and unwanted "help" from my little boy. There was a lot of sanding to be done so I gave him an assignment. He didn't complete it because three minutes later he just wanted to play. I was getting frustrated with the whole thing and my crabbiness was growing. Then it occurred to me that maybe I was missing the point of pinewood derby. I stopped what I was doing and reevaluated the project. Elias and I went back to work on the car together, sharing the experience and having some fun together. I certainly didn't NEED his help in any way to get the job done, but I WANTED his help because that is what it was really all about.

It occurred to me later that maybe this was a good example of the work in God's kingdom. He would probably be a lot better off in getting things done if I wasn't in the way with all of my weaknesses, insecurities, and essentially selfish nature. But God WANTS me to help because He loves me. My involvement is primarily between God and I and no matter what the results of the race may be, the important thing is that we finish it together.

About Me

Timothy C. Stevens is a husband, father, business man, and pastor. Tim served as a Firefighter in the United States Air Force attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. Following his enlistment he continued to serve as a civilian Firefighter/Paramedic in Florida and North Carolina. After retiring into the business world Tim spent several years in study and eventually became an ordained minister. He continues to work in business and volunteers as a chaplain for fire rescue and for combat veterans.

Tim’s experiences over the course of eighteen years as a first responder help him to minister to victims as well as fellow first responders. As a veteran who has been through traumatic experiences he is able to relate to the difficulties faced by combat veterans as well. Tim’s crisis of faith from traumatic events was ultimately instrumental in him becoming a pastor as the issues were resolved and the memories healed.

To meet the challenges of being an on-call chaplain and to truly enjoy life Tim realized that he needed to be in much better physical condition. This quest required a radical change in nutrition and exercise that has produced amazing results. Realizing how key health is to the whole person he has consolidated his passion for helping others into Commissioned Life Initiative.

What are the best kind of Shoes for Fitness?

That Broken Arm is all in Your Mind

An estimated 19 million Americans are living with major depression, a debilitating disease that is potentially fatal. It isn't just something they can "get over" and trying to tough it out often times just makes it worse. Depression, like all mental illnesses, carries a certain stigma that keeps people from seeking proper treatment. The stigma also leads to isolation which can be dangerous. In church settings the stigma may even cross the line to accusing the person of lacking faith because they aren't well.

Depression is a medical condition and it is treatable. The needed treatment may be short term, not unlike needing a cast for an arm fracture. Some may need treatment long term in order to lead healthy lives. The key is to make that difficult step of seeking medical help. Prayer is absolutely appropriate and highly recommended. You are welcome to contact me for prayer and an understanding ear. But just like you would seek help for a broken arm, get medical help for this medical condition.

The best way to describe depression is, in a word, pain. The good news is a lot of progress has been made in treating not only the pain of this medical condition but in helping to heal from it. Just like with any medical condition getting proper nutrition and becoming physically healthy can go a long way toward helping you heal. Please take care of yourself and let me know if I can help.

Is Your Mission Finished?

Chaplain's Corner

The world was expecting a savior, a messenger and deliverer from God who would set all things right. When Jesus arrived on the scene He wasn’t at all what they were expecting. He didn’t talk, teach, or act like they thought He should if He were to accomplish what they wanted Him to accomplish. To this day the life and teachings of Jesus seem to raise more questions than they answer.

Jesus was fully committed to honoring the Father and to carrying out the mission He had been given. He can only be understood within this context. Before He stepped down from heaven and became a part of His creation as a human being He knew the cost of freedom. He had determined that if the price had to be paid He would pay it Himself.

Jesus life and entire focus were driven by His devotion and His mission. He intended to carry out the will of the Father and absolutely nothing would stand in His way, not even His own life. He put the mission first, He would not accept defeat and He would not quit. God’s desire was that no one would be left behind, so Jesus came to make a way for us.

Jesus endured hardship, exhaustion, betrayal, and indescribable emotional and physical pain. He, more than anyone, knows the suffering of a warrior.

The word “gospel” means good news. The good news is that Jesus succeeded in His mission. The door of heaven has been opened for us.

May God bless you!

How to Fail at Fitness - A Proven 3-Step Program

1) Do Not Be Accountable!
Only successful people are teachable and accountable to others. They team up with buddies, mentors, or coaches and they stay in touch. They do this with transparency and humility because they want to succeed. Remember this as you set out to fail. Isolate yourself, don't let anyone tell you anything, and don't be honest with anyone. Not only will these important steps help you fail but most people won't even know you failed when you do.

2) Do Not Exercise!
Increasing physical activity leads to improved health in every way and healthy people become physically fit at their ideal weight. It is very difficult to find a bad exercise program so it is best to avoid all of them. Whatever you do, don't get into a structured program that is both challenging and fun. Those things are habit forming and developing good habits is detrimental to failure. Let's just stick with the recliner and the fad diets that always failed us before.

3) Deprive Yourself of Nutrition!
This is the biggie. Even if you mess up and make a bad decision toward being successful in points one and two if you follow this tip you will always fail so it is your ace in the hole. Fortunately it is very easy to do. Most likely you are not getting proper nutrition anyway so reducing the quantity of your poor nutrition multiplies your chances of failure. After about the first week of reduced intake your body starts screaming for nutrients so you become weak, irritable, cloudy-headed, and overwhelmed by cravings. It works every time. But if you want to make sure try adding in supplements that contain soy, artificial sweeteners, or artificial flavorings. These are the wicked three dieting ingredients that wreak havoc on your system making fitness impossible.

So follow these important steps and I promise you your momentary impulse to become and stay healthy is doomed. You can do it, or rather, NOT do it!

Now that you are inspired to fail DO NOT contact the author because he is a fraud. He is succeeding and likes to help others on the path to success.

Commissioned Life Initiative - What it Means to You!

For far too many of us the idea of living life according to a great commission sounds good but the reality is we may be too unhealthy in body, soul, or spirit to respond to any greater purpose. We settle in to our life of responsibilities and adapt to it. Over time the extent of our health diminishes until we have just enough strength to make it through an ordinary week. Even going on vacation is stressful and exhausting, not to mention beyond our financial means. In military terms we lack operational readiness.

The purpose of Commissioned Life Initiative is to help you attain and maintain total wellness. Commit to wellness and be fully prepared to respond to inspiration so that you can truly enjoy a fulfilling life. Join me in this quest to encourage and challenge one another.
