It's a Bird! It's a Plane! No, it's a Human!!!

It's a Bird! It's a Plane! No, it's a Human!!!

I think we are all a little fascinated with the idea of a superhero. As kids we would debate the strengths of each of them and argue about who would win in different types of situations. I always thought it would be cool to get bitten by a radioactive spider, find a superpill, or maybe get a special watch to give me super powers.

Salting the Life Leaches

Salting the Life Leaches

We all know at least one life leach and if we aren't careful we can become one ourselves. Life leaches are people who are so wrapped up in negativity they find a way to suck the life out of everything. They are masters of finding the problem in every solution. They find fault with everything and everyone. It is entirely possible that being a life leach is a requirement for holding a political office.

Life leaches always hate where they live and find a way to be miserable in all seasons. Mention the beautiful fall colors in Vermont and they will reply that the scenery in Florida is awful. Talk about your favorite barbecue joint in Kansas City and they will tell you that every restaurant within 50 miles of your current location is terrible, the service is the worst, and there are live rats living inside the salad bars.

Starting What I Finished

Starting What I Finished

Yesterday I did something I have never done before. I ran an official 5k race while wearing a number tag with a chip for the computerized timing system. For some runners it was competitive, for others it was for amusement, for some like me it was a personal challenge, and for all of us it was a way to support a worthy charity.

Thanksgiving Healthy Recipes: Green Bean Casserole

Thanksgiving Healthy Recipes: Green Bean Casserole

I love green bean casserole! The problem with all of the creamy goodness topped with fried onions is the ingredient list in the standard recipe. But it won't be Thanksgiving without it so we have work to do. Fortunately, green bean casserole is like any other food. It's even better if you make it with fresh ingredients instead of processed gook.

Foods that Sting our Insides

Foods that Sting our Insides

I hate getting a splinter in my finger. There is pain involved in getting the stupid thing out and a lot of the time you end up with a red, swollen, and sore finger afterward. For a couple of days all it takes is bumping that spot the wrong way and there is an instant reminder of healing in progress. That's inflammation. It is redness, swelling, and soreness as the body is working to heal from something.

I am allergic to bees and wasps so I am very familiar with a more dangerous kind of inflammation as well. My body overreacts to the toxins in these insect stings and the overreaction by my immune system creates a worse health problem for me than the demonic stinger from the evil little insect. I get the localized redness, swelling, and pain that everyone goes through but my body's response has a bonus round. The excessive release of chemicals and such intended to fight a toxin and bring healing produce inflammation throughout my entire body. I turn into a strawberry and feel awful for couple of days. Fortunately I haven't had a reaction causing excessive swelling and difficulty breathing. I have to be careful though because allergic reactions tend to get worse every time.

Do You Want to be Made Well?

Do You Want to be Made Well?

When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be made well?” -John 5:6

In this encounter the Apostle John doesn't mention whether or not Jesus asked this of any of the other people who were present who also had physical problems. If anyone else was asked the question and honestly responded with "no" then John didn't include them in the story. One noteworthy part of this stroll by the Pool of Siloam and the resulting miracle is the fact that Jesus asked this question before doing anything.

The Amazing Sawdust Diet

The Amazing Sawdust Diet

Legend has it that back in the old days a shady used car dealer could make a worn out transmission run smoothly just long enough to sell a car by putting sawdust in with the transmission fluid. This would fill the gaps in the worn out gears so the car would behave through a test drive. It didn’t take the new owner very many miles to find out they had been swindled though. The sawdust trick was very temporary and just made transmission problems worse in the long run. Even today there are stories of dubious additives in engines and gears and stop leak solutions in leaky radiators.

Fortunately consumer laws have us covered in most of these situations, even with private sellers. Expedient solutions to hide the true condition of something from a buyer are just wrong.  We certainly don’t like to be deceived and nobody wants to be served an expedient solution to a problem rather than a real fix. Temporary fixes just mean that a problem is definitely going to come back and we are going to have to deal with it again. The way things usually work out a problem is made even worse by a temporary fix. It is far better to just do things right in the first place. I try to only do business with places that have the integrity to always do things right. I think most people would agree with me on this.

Winning the War with Money

 Winning the War with Money

My era of military service officially classifies me as a cold war veteran. As such, I tell people to take it easy on me because I endured a lot of boredom and inspections. I say that because I find it amusing but I was actually fairly busy because I was a firefighter. In the Air Force that meant responding to a lot of in-flight emergencies, the occasional flight line emergency, and anything that happened on or near the greater base area which is essentially a small city.

Blessed Beyond The Curse - The Wedding Sermon

Blessed Beyond The Curse

This is the message that I gave at my niece's wedding.  So if you slept through it or weren't able to make it or weren't invited you are welcome to read it.  It would help to imagine it being flawlessly delivered in a commanding tone by one of the world's greatest orators.  Or me.  That would work too.  Enjoy.

Thanksgiving Healthy Recipes: Cranberries

Thanksgiving Healthy Recipes: Cranberries

Cranberries are wonderful little orbs or tartness that put the 'tive in festive for the holidays. We certainly can't serve a Thanksgiving dinner without them. As clean eating health maximizers this can pose a problem though. Cranberries are really, really tart. If you don't do something to sweeten them up your dinner guests will remember you always for all the wrong reasons. So let's get creative.

The expedient and well-established cranberry tartness solutions are Mayflower boat loads of refined sugar and the nefarious high fructose corn syrup. The Pilgrims didn't have these unnecessary ingredients and neither did their hosts. So we don't need them either. Rather than going with maple sugar or syrup let's boost the sweetness and flavor with fruit.

Thanksgiving Healthy Recipes: Pumpkin Pie

Thanksgiving Healthy Recipes: Pumpkin Pie

All of this Thanksgiving talk has certainly made me hungry and a lot of foods come to mind on the topic. Both my heart and my taste buds are inexorably drawn to my favorite part of the entire meal though so let's get to it. We have to have pumpkin pie! This recipe is for a clean healthy version that delivers all of the sweet, satisfying goodness of your pumpkin dreams. If you are one of those who likes to bury their pie in topping we have you covered for that also with an optional whipped topping made from coconut milk. Without the topping you can figure on a nine-serving pie coming in below 250 calories per slice. With the topping it depends on whether you use a dollop or the whole bowl, divided by the total calories in your can of coconut milk.

Thanksgiving Healthy Recipes: Clean Eating Dressing ~ Stuffing

Thanksgiving Healthy Recipes: Clean Eating Dressing ~ Stuffing

Always a favorite, this hearty and flavorful concoction of holiday goodness usually sneaks in a witch's brew of prepackaged chemicals, unnecessary calories, and unwanted sodium. Halloween is over so let's leave out the eye of newt and the preservatives found in a dead man's pocket.

This recipe is packed with the traditional flavors we all love with the hearty gourmet addition of some exotic mushrooms and a little optional wine. Depending on your exact ingredients it should come out to under 200 calories per cup.Options for gluten-free and/or vegan variations are included.

There is no 912. It's Just You.

What it sometimes feels like to be the first responder to a 911 call. Written from the perspective of an EMT Paramedic, but it certainly applies to Firefighters and Police Officers as well.

Don't Mess with The Duke!

Don't Mess with The Duke!

It was a good devotional about being more Christ-like and I liked what the guy had to say.  Well, I liked most of what he had to say anyway.  It was probably just me and I was reading too much into it, but something rubbed me the wrong way.  He said not to be a John Wayne Christian.  I know the guy meant well and I understood his point.  But you don’t mess with The Duke.

Thanksgiving Healthy Recipes: The Perfect Turkey

Thanksgiving Healthy Recipes: The Perfect Turkey

Assuming you and/or your guests are not vegan or vegetarians the bird is going to be the star of the show. If nothing else goes right this is the make it or break it championship game of Thanksgiving. Get the turkey right and folk singers in a tryptophan daze will tune their instruments while finding words that rhyme with your name. Get it wrong and pizza delivery is not a healthy choice but it may be your only choice. So let’s get it right. Don’t worry, it’s actually pretty easy if you follow some basic turkey rules.

Why Should You Call 911?

There was an article in the news today about police stopping a woman who was speeding because she was taking her husband to the hospital for a possible heart attack. The police kept her from continuing and called for paramedics to come to the scene to assist and transport the patient. This sparked a lot of criticism and debate with many questioning the actions of the police. I chimed in supporting their actions and realized from a lot of the responses that people are just not aware of how to properly deal with an emergency like this.

How Much Does Fire Weigh?

The hamstring is a term used for the four muscles on the back of the upper leg. “Pulling a hamstring” just means that one or more of those muscles have been injured. This can happen at any age or physical condition. It is typically pretty painful and slow to heal. It can also be fairly serious and may require surgery if the damage is extensive.

My injury happened about a week ago while I was running. My legs were very tight despite stretching after a warmup. By the end of my run my right leg was not doing well at all and it continued to tighten up and hurt. The next morning I could barely walk. This prompted me to do some research on hamstring pulls since I had a vested interest. That, and paramedics as a general rule don’t go to doctors if they are still breathing. If they do stop breathing they will still drive themselves. I was still breathing so went on the internet to diagnose myself and put together a treatment plan.

Ouch! I Should Have Looked into This Sooner.

So I have been stretching before, during, and after running because that's what you are supposed to do. I was right about that part. I was wrong about thinking I knew how to stretch properly. Fortunately I didn't pull my hamstring too bad but it was enough to take me off my feet for a couple of days and it definitely set me back on my running goals. Back to the drawing board, or Google, as the case may be.

Here is a good article I found on proper stretching for runners. I think I will follow this advice and, hopefully, spare myself more pain.

The Beauty Secret

A stranger may notice my wife’s beauty and I would certainly agree. But that stranger knows nothing about her and doesn’t understand anything about her true beauty. She has stood by me through the worst of times and best of times, as I have stood by her. I have seen her heartbroken and I have seen her dance for joy. Her beauty shined in unimaginable ways as she became an amazing mother. Her steadfast faith causes the light of heaven to shine into this dark world. Yes, my wife is beautiful, but in ways I alone have been privileged to see. I am her husband and my life is filled with her beauty for as long as we both shall live.

The Magic Patience Pill

Patience is hard. It usually involves postponing or denying some kind of gratification and I really don’t like that. There is no waiting room at my house. I don’t like to wait. I get annoyed if my prepackaged, ready-to-eat snack is in a package that is difficult to open. And don’t get me started about traffic. During the winter tourist season in Florida it is actually possible to be awarded sainthood just from driving to the store.

Impatience comes to me a lot more naturally than patience but I don’t like what it produces. Impatience and the resulting frustration can keep me from all sorts of good things. Impatience can keep me from learning to play a musical instrument, learning a foreign language, catching fish, or getting in shape physically. At it’s worst impatience makes me extremely unhealthy, unhappy, and unsuccessful. It causes divorce, vehicle crashes, and Christmas presents to be opened on the 22nd of December. It’s that bad.
